Essential Navigation, Dayskipper, Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster, Ocean Yachtmaster and PPR

Oceanwest Sailing School is a RYA / YA recognised training centre and we provide RYA Online theory courses in conjunction with Navathome Australia, Navathome and RYA Interactive. All of our courses are supported by a personal qualified trainer, to help you through the course. RYA theory courses are the core of the RYA Sail Cruising and Power syllabus and each course is essential for when you are planning to complete the associated practical course.

RYA Day Skipper Theory $675 - includes a free Portland plotter and a set of brass dividers (valued at $50)

This course covers the theory required to plan and complete coastal passages by day in familiar waters. It will increase your confidence about navigation and help you to sail your yacht with more confidence and certainty. It is a great way to understand how tides work and how they will affect your navigation and will help you to really sharpen your passage planning and position fixing. At the end of the course you will have covered the skills required to undertake coastal passages by day in reasonable weather conditions and in reasonably familiar areas.

RYA Coastal / Yachtmaster Theory $675

This is an advanced navigation course that will cover all the theory required to Yacht master standard. This will include meteorology, collision regulations as well as advanced chart work and vessel stability. It will teach you the collision regulations for night sailing and pilotage techniques to get you in and out of harbours at night. You should have completed day skipper theory before you start coastal theory. Even if you have a lot of practical experience with sailing this course can be very difficult if you do not have a reasonable knowledge of chartwork to Day Skipper level. At the end of the course you will have covered the navigation skills required to enter coastal ports by day or night and to undertake coastal passages in variable weather conditions.

Ocean Yachtmaster $675

. You will cover all aspects of astro navigation techniques including use of the sextant, position fixing, dead reckoning, star and sun sights. This is the peak course in the Yachtmaster cruising syllabus and equips you to plan and execute the navigational requirements for blue water sailing. Contact us for more details. Professional Practices and Responsibilities $75

After you have passed your RYA Yachtmaster exam and want to work commercially, you will need to complete the PPR course. you can do this via our RYA Interactive website. Please contact us for more details.

RYA Essential Navigation and Safety $250

This is an inspiring online course for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or pretty much anything else on the water! Course fee includes theory kit, Breton style chart plotter and a set of dividers. All you need to get you started in seamanship, navigation and safety on board. This course is provided through Oceanwest Sailing School and RYA Interactive. If you are planning to complete a Day Skipper course you do not need to complete Essential Navigation first as the Day Skipper course assumes no prior knowledge.

What's included in your theory kit

Essential navigation course includes a portland plotter and dividers, course notes, charts and the online course.

Day Skipper theory course includes a portland plotter and dividers, RYA Day Skipper course notes, charts, the RYA almanac, the RYA plotter simulator, access to the Navathome Australia online Day Skipper course and online support and tuition.

Coastal Yachtmaster includes the RYA course pack with RYA Yachtmaster course notes, charts, RYA plotter simulator, access to the Navathome Australia online Coastal Yachtmaster course and personal online support.

Ocean Yachtmaster theory course includes the RYA combined question paper and almanac, access to the Navathome.com online Ocean Yachtmaster theory course and online support from an Ocean Yachtmaster Instructor

How to book your course

Decide what course is best suited to your experience and objectives. If you want to discuss what course is best for you or would like more information, please email us at sailing@oceanwest.net.au or call Gary on 0412 060130. You can then book and pay for your course by direct bank transfer, credit card or cheque.

What happens when you book

When you book a course, we send you an email giving details of the course and a password to access the online part of the training program.

We then dispatch your RYA theory kit by express post. The kit contains RYA practice charts, Dayskipper Handbook, RYA practice alamanac, chart plotter simulator and course notes / exercises. For Day Skipper and Essential Navigation courses we also include a set of protractors and dividers.

You can begin the course as soon as you recieve your password and you can contact us at any time if you need help or want to discuss anything.

The big advantage of our courses are that you can complete them at home rather than spend five days in the classroom and you are then very well prepared for your practical courses.

You have six months in which to complete the course, but we can extend your access to the online course as required for a further six months (an admin fee of $60 is payable to extend)
